ECONOMY and TOURISM IN ÖREN
In Ören, the natives earned their lives by agriculture (raising and selling olives, citrus fruits, sesame, tobacco, cotton and cereals), husbandry, fishery and weaving (rug, carpet and fabrics etc.) until the year 1990.
The contribution of tourism to the town increased substantially after 90's. Related to this, hotels and restaurant business, yachting, entertainment business improved and accelerated the economy of town.
Gökova Bay is an inland sea that has the most fishery species. So, some of natives earn their lives by fishery. In the Gökova Bay, fishing is possible during 12 month period of a year. There are so many species such as gild-head beam, lagos, bass, dentex, grey mullet, red mullet etc. Since Ören town has a warm climate, natives commonly make commercial growing of hothouse flowers, vegetables or fruits.
Carpet, rug, silk and fabric weaving is common in Ören and its surroundings Çökertme, Gürceyiz, Akçakaya, Kırcağız, Bakırköy, Dereköy, Bozalan and Türkevleri villages (called Gereme Villages by natives). Large rugs are weaved mainly.
The yachting and yacht tourism takes an important place in Ören town. Regular Blue Voyage Tours and Sailing Boat Races are organized in the summer time.
